How to Read People From Their Eyes

how to read people from their eyes

By the time you've read this post you will be able to correctly identify what a person is thinking about from their eyes alone. Everyone uses the same eye movements when they are thinking of certain things. To completely understand this concept I'll walk you through some background first.

What is NLP?

NLP is a fantastic development from American psychologists Grindler and Bandler. It is known as neuro-linguistic-programming, or NLP for short.

The technique of reading a persons mind through their eye movements is a classic example of NLP research and what it has uncovered.

Mind Reading Technique

Eye movements can reveal great information and with the technique I'm about to teach you, you will be able to read some of it very easily.

What to Look For

If a person is remembering something they saw, their eyes will move upward. If they are recalling something they heard, they look to the side and tilt their head as if their listening. If they are recalling a feeling or emotion, they'll look down and to the right. When a person is mentally talking to themselves, they look down and to the left.

Now you know what to look for, you can tell exactly what a person is thinking about.

Difficulties of Reading Eye Movements

The main problem is that eye movements can occur in a fraction of a second and come in clusters, making it hard to read. If you record it via camera though, you can clearly see the difference between what a person says and what they are actually thinking.

Another NLP Technique

Since we're on the subject I thought I may as well throw out some more interesting information collected from this fascinating area.

Sell Anything to Anyone Through Their Dominant Sense

People generally choose a certain sense and use that in their communication process.

To explain what I mean, 35% of people prefer the visual information channel and will use visual phrases such as " I see what you mean", "That's perfectly clear" or "Can you show me that?".

You will get the visual dominant people's attention by showing them pictures, charts, graphs and asking questions such as "Get the picture?".

25% of people prefer the auditory channel and use words such as "That rings a bell" or "That doesn't sound right" and you can communicate to them with phrases such as "Does that sound good?".

The other 40% of people prefer the feeling channel and will say "Let's kick that idea around" or "I can't quite grasp what your saying". This group of people love to test drive things and be involved in a demonstration so they can "Grasp the idea".

Summary

  • NLP means neuro-linguistic-programming and was created by Grindler and Bandler.

  • Recalling what they heard - Looks to the side and tilts as if listening

  • Recalling a feeling or emotion - Looks down and to the right

I agree that NLP is a fascinating subject. I've learned about the sense dominance previously on a marketing course and I had an example that was taught to me that I think would be helpful here for people to understand it easier.

Let's say you run a car selling company. First few things you want to find out when you want to sell a car to someone is what sense they operate on. Then when you know, direct everything towards that sense. i.e. if their visual dominant, you can show them the car and direct them with words such as “look at this...”, “can you see...” and “I think you know what your looking for...”. Then you're much more likely to sell that car to that person, since you're 'on the same wave length' as them.

Hope that helps a little bit! smilies/smiley.gif
