This article aims to teach you the memory peg system so you can improve your memory drastically. The memory peg system is very special for the fact it’s incredibly easy to remember and to use. Reading this article will enable you to gain unlimited memory through the help of a very simple system.
What is the Memory Peg System?
Firstly I’d like to give you a different consonant sound for each of the digits of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0. What I teach you here must be learned and committed to memory. Once you remember these you can remember infinite strings of numbers or items. To help you remember these I will give you a small memory aid for each.
There you have the complete consonant list for the peg system. Remember that the letters are not important, only the sound. Another little reminder to help you remember is this –
'TeN MoRe LoGiC FiBS'
Also, none of the vowels mean anything in the memory peg system. You basically ignore them. There are certain consonants you ignore as well, they are W, H and Y. Remember this by the world WHY. Memory Peg System Basics Recap
You should now be ready to see your first lot of peg system words. Memory Peg System – Peg words 1 to 10
To make sure you understand, re-look at the small recap above. Remember that vowels and WHY mean nothing. So for number 5 (LAW) you will ignore the A and W, leaving you with only an L. What was L on the consonant sounds? That’s right, 5! I’ll go over one more to make sure you understand correctly. Let’s take number 8. 8 is (IVY) again you notice the vowel I, so remove it. Now you have VY, again you notice one of the ignore consonant of WHY which is Y, so you are now left with V. If you’ve remember the consonant table correctly, you’ll know that V = 8. If you completely understand this so far, fantastic! You are on your way to an amazing memory. If not, I’d suggest you go back and re-read until you do. Since from now on I will just list the complete peg system list from 1 to 100. Get ready to never forget.
The memory peg system from 1 to 100 is – 1. Tie
Application of the Peg SystemThe peg system can be used for many different things. For example if you wanted to remember someones phone number you could break that phone number down into the peg words. Example - If I wanted to remember - 01685836778 - Then I'd break them down into as few peg words as possible. I could break down this number to - 01 - Tie 68 - Chef 58 - Lava 36 - Match 77 - Coke 8 - Ivy You can now see I've broken down the phone number into 6 peg words. They are Tie, Chef, Lava, Match, Coke and Ivy. Here comes the fun part. To remember these peg words and to remember them in order you need to use another skill called visualisation. VisualisationVisualisation is the act of visualising something in your head. The peg words are set out to be visualised. When you visualise something you have a better chance of remembering it. Try visualising that phone number again (01685836778), find it hard? You should, because the human brain doesn't like to visualise such things. The human brain and your memory is based almost entirely on mental pictures or images, expecially funny, violent or sexual pictures. Here are the twenty items that you will be able to memorize in sequence in a surprisingly short time.
carpet, paper, bottle, bed, fish, chair, window, telephone, cigarette, nail, typewriter, shoe, microphone, pen, television set, plate, donut, car, coffee pot, and brick.
The first thing you have to do is to get a picture of the first item, "carpet" in your mind. You all know what a carpet is, so just "see" it in your mind's eye. Don't just see the word, "carpet," but actually, for a second, see either any carpet, or, a carpet that is in your own home and is therefore familiar to you. The thing that you now know or already remember is the item, "carpet." The new thing, the thing you want to remember will be the second item, "paper." You must now associate or link carpet to, or with, paper. The association must be as ridiculous as possible. For example, you might picture the carpet in your home made out of paper. See yourself walking on it, and actually hearing the paper crinkle under foot. You can picture yourself writing something on a carpet instead of paper. Either one of these is a ridiculous picture or association. A sheet of paper lying on a carpet would not make a good association. It is too logical! Our mental picture must be ridiculous or illogical. You must actually see this ridiculous picture in your mind for a fraction of a second. Do not just try to see the words, but see it as a massive picture in your mind's eye. Do this with each item so it will be carpet to paper then paper to bottle then bottle to bed etc. By doing this you will be imprinting the list on your brain, allowing your to recall it at anytime. Example of what a visualisation should look like while linking fish and chair-
You should now fully understand visualisation and are ready to remember that phone number. Remembering Phone NumbersIf I wanted to remember - 01685836778 - Then I'd break them down into as few peg words as possible. I could break down this number to - 01 - Tie 68 - Chef 58 - Lava 36 - Match 77 - Coke 8 - Ivy You can now see I've broken down the phone number into 6 peg words. They are Tie, Chef, Lava, Match, Coke and Ivy. I will now visualise a tie with a chef. So for example I could 'see' the tie cooking, or a chef cooking and eating a tie. This is funny, so it'll stick in your mind. Next is chef to lava. I could imagine lava covering and killing a chef (even though it's unpleasant, it's violent and therefore will stick in your mind). I've now memorised the first 6 numbers of the phone number with a simple 'mind movie' if you will of a tie cooking in a kitchen with a few chefs then all of a sudden lava breaks through the wall and kills the chefs. All you need to do to remember the full number is associate the other words into this story and you're set to go.
